Hexa Nest Strategy: Chains and Board Control

Quick answer

In Hexa Nest you drag stacks of coloured egg tiles onto a honeycomb board. Neighbouring stacks with the same top colour merge tile by tile, and ten or more tiles of one colour hatch into an OvO. Reach the hatch goal before the board fills. Place stacks where they touch several matching colours, keep a corner for messy stacks and keep the middle open.

Hexa Nest is a hexa-sort puzzle with a satisfying twist: when tiles merge, they flow across one by one, and a well-placed stack can set off a chain reaction across the board. Because every cell has six neighbours, placement is everything. This guide explains how merging works and gives you a plan for keeping the honeycomb under control.

Games to try

How Hexa Nest works

Your tray offers stacks of coloured egg tiles. Drag a stack onto an empty cell of the honeycomb board. When neighbouring stacks share the same top colour, the tiles flow across one by one, and that movement can create new matches next door, causing a chain.

When a stack gathers ten or more tiles of one colour, they hatch: an OvO pops out, cheers and flies to your goal. Hatch enough tiles before the board fills up to clear the level.

Place for chains, not just for space

The strongest placements touch several matching colours at once. A stack dropped between two stacks with the same top colour will pull tiles from both, and if the result exposes another match, the chain continues.

Before each drop, look at the top colour of the new stack and find the cell with the most matching neighbours. If no cell has a match, place the stack where it will be useful later, next to stacks whose lower tiles share its colour.

Keep the middle open

Central cells have the most neighbours, which makes them the most valuable for chains. Filling them with mismatched stacks early is one of the quickest ways to lose.

A helpful habit is to keep one corner for messy stacks, the ones with mixed colours that do not fit anywhere right now. Corners have fewer neighbours, so a bad stack there blocks less. Over time, as colours line up, you can work the corner back into play.

Think about what is underneath

Each stack can contain several colours, and only the top colour matches at first. When the top tiles flow away, the next colour is revealed and may match a different neighbour. Experienced players think one layer deeper: they place stacks so that after the first merge, the colour underneath also has a partner nearby. This is how long chain reactions happen on purpose rather than by luck.

Padlocks, sleepy stacks and new shapes

As you progress through 200 levels, Hexa Nest introduces new board shapes, padlocked cells and sleepy stacks. Padlocked cells open when you hatch enough tiles, so watch their counters and plan to use the new space. New board shapes change which cells have the most neighbours, so re-read the board at the start of each level instead of playing on autopilot.

The usual OvO.games rhythm applies: a breather level every 5th and a hard level every 10th.

Boosters: Hammer, Shuffle, Hint and Continue

When the board is nearly full, boosters can rescue a level. The Hammer removes something that is in the way, which is ideal for one awkward stack in the middle. Shuffle changes what is on offer, Hint suggests a good placement, and Continue lets you keep going when you run out of room. Use Hint while learning, because it shows the kind of multi-neighbour placements this guide recommends.

Where to play Hexa Nest

Hexa Nest is free in any modern web browser at ovo.games and in the OvO.games app for iPhone, iPad and Android. The first 40 levels are free for everyone with ads, and OvO Pass unlocks every level and removes ads. For other sorting puzzles, see our Chick Sort and Screw Crew guides, or Nest Blocks if you like managing board space.

Questions

How many tiles do I need to hatch an OvO in Hexa Nest?

Ten or more tiles of one colour on a stack hatch into an OvO, which flies to your goal.

When do stacks merge?

When neighbouring stacks share the same top colour, the tiles flow across one by one. That can expose new matches and start a chain.

What are padlocked cells?

Cells that are closed at the start. They open when you hatch enough tiles.

How do I lose a Hexa Nest level?

If the board fills up before you reach the hatch goal, the level ends.
