Match puzzles: Tile Trio, Peep Pop 2 and Feather Solitaire

Match puzzles are the easiest place to start. Tile Trio is a triple tile-matching game: tap free tiles of fruit, sweets and toys into a 7-slot tray, and three of a kind pop. A full tray ends the level, so you plan a few taps ahead, but there is no countdown. Peep Pop 2 is pastel match-3 where every piece is an OvO. Swap neighbours to line up three or more, and longer lines make rockets, bombs and rainbow eggs that you can combine for big clears. It has 300 levels with goals such as cracking ice and freeing OvOs trapped in bubbles. Feather Solitaire is TriPeaks: tap a face-up card one rank higher or lower than the pile card and build long streaks.

Sorting puzzles: Chick Sort, Screw Crew, Hexa Nest and more

Sorting puzzles ask you to put colours in order, and the OvO catalog has the widest choice here. Chick Sort is a branch-sorting game: tap a branch, then another, and the OvOs at the tip hop across; four of a colour fly away. Screw Crew is a 3D screw puzzle where you unscrew coloured screws into OvO boxes and turn the board to see under the plates. Hexa Nest stacks egg tiles on a honeycomb, and ten of a colour hatch into an OvO. Nest Express sends OvOs to the bus of their colour. Yarn Knots unravels a knitted picture onto spools. Screw Crew, Hexa Nest and Yarn Knots are some of the newest games in the catalog, if you have played the older ones already.

Logic puzzles: Flock Out, Gate Jam and Pixel Hatch

Logic puzzles are about order: one wrong move blocks the next. Flock Out is a one-tap puzzle. Each OvO faces a direction, and when you tap it, it flies off the board if its path is clear. If a friend is in the way they bump and you lose a heart, so look before you tap; pressing an OvO shows its path first. Gate Jam is a sliding-block puzzle with a timer: drag carts full of OvOs out through the gate of their colour before time runs out. Pixel Hatch sends painter OvOs around a conveyor belt to paint a pixel picture, and the order you send them in decides whether you finish or fill the bench. All three have 200 levels.

Block puzzles: Nest Blocks

Nest Blocks is the OvO take on the classic block puzzle. Drag glossy jelly blocks from a tray of three onto an 8 by 8 nest, and fill a whole row or column to clear it. In Adventure mode, eggs sit on the board, and clearing the lines they are in rescues the OvOs inside. Classic mode is the endless version: no level goal, just your best score. The dealer always gives you blocks that can fit somewhere, and boosters include a free Undo per level, a Hammer and New blocks. Block puzzles are a good choice for long sessions because there is no timer, and the drag controls work well with a mouse on a laptop as well as on a touch screen.

Merge puzzles: Egg Drop, OvO Island and Nest Guard

Merge games build things up instead of clearing them away. Egg Drop is a drop-and-merge physics puzzle: aim an egg over a glass jar, and when two matching OvOs touch they hatch into the next one, up a chain of 12. Keep the pile under the red line and see how far you get; a daily mode gives everyone the same eggs. OvO Island is the relaxed option, a merge board where you fill OvO customers' orders to rebuild three islands, with your progress saved to your account. Nest Guard mixes merging with tower defence: merge twin defender OvOs into stronger ones to keep critters away from the nest. Pick Egg Drop for five minute breaks and OvO Island for slow evenings.

Are these puzzle games really free, and where can you play?

Yes. Every OvO game is free to play in a web browser at ovo.games, with nothing to install, and in the OvO.games app for iPhone, iPad and Android.
