How to play Hop Hop

What is the goal in Hop Hop?

Climb as high as you can in one run. Each run starts on a grassy nest with two friend OvOs, and there is no last level: the tower goes on for as long as you keep landing. The big number at the top is your score, and the pill under it counts down the platforms to the next zone. The zones change every 50 platforms, in this order: Meadow, Treetops, Clouds, Sunset, Night sky and Space, each with its own sky and platform style. Every 25 platforms you reach a wide rest nest with a checkpoint flag and two cheering friends. The platforms start wide and slow, then get narrower and faster the higher you go. One missed hop and your OvO tumbles down, which ends the run, unless a Shield or a continue saves it.

How to play Hop Hop, step by step

The whole game is one action. You can tap anywhere on the screen, so it plays fine with one thumb, and there is no button to aim for. The first time you play, two short tips at the top of the screen explain the basics, and you can read them again under How to play in the settings. The pictures below come from the first hops of a run on a phone, in the Meadow, where the platforms are at their widest and slowest.

1. 1Step 1: Watch the platform above you. It slides left and right across the whole width and never stops, so a good moment always comes back. A faint dotted line rises straight up from your OvO and shows where it will go.
2. 2Step 2: Tap anywhere on the screen to hop. On a computer, Space, the Up arrow or W work too. Your OvO jumps straight up and cannot steer in the air, so all the skill is in when you tap.
3. 3Step 3: Land on the platform to score. A normal landing is 1 point and a Perfect near the middle is 2. Three Perfects in a row start a Fever: for the next five landings your OvO is pulled to the middle, every landing counts as a Perfect and a golden trail follows it.

What are the special platforms in Hop Hop?

New platform types join as you climb. From platform 15, a spring can appear: it waits a moment, then launches your OvO past the next platform onto the one after it, for 3 points. From platform 30 there are crumble clouds, which break soon after you land, never sooner than a second, with a red pulse and a ticking sound, so hop off fast. From platform 40, some stretches have platforms packed closer together that also move a bit faster. From platform 60, some platforms bob up and down, and from platform 80 wind zones push your OvO sideways while it is in the air, shown by drifting leaves or stardust and a message on screen. If colours are hard to tell apart, turn on Shapes on colours in the settings: it adds a symbol to each special platform.

Tips for a higher score in Hop Hop

Tap a little before the middle of the platform reaches the dotted line. The platform keeps sliding while your OvO is in the air, so tapping when it is already lined up often lands you off-centre. Don't rush: the platform above keeps sweeping back and forth, so if you missed a good moment, wait for the next pass. Go for Perfects early, while platforms are wide and slow, because a Fever gives you five easy landings. On a crumble cloud, take the first safe hop instead of waiting for a Perfect. On a bobbing platform, watch its height as well as its side-to-side position. In wind, the drift is pushing your OvO sideways during the hop, so time the tap with that drift in mind. Use rest nests as a breather before the next zone.

How do eggs, costumes and the Daily tower work?

Eggs sit on some of the platforms, hovering above the middle. Land anywhere on that platform and the egg is yours. Eggs only count inside Hop Hop and unlock costumes in the Wardrobe. There are 11: Sunny is free, Bow needs 10 eggs, Sporty 25, Kitty 50, Smarty 90 and Cosmo 150, while Sprout needs a best score of 25, Blossom 50, Party 100, DJ 150 and Royal 250. After a run with eggs, an optional short video can double the eggs from that run. On the start screen, the Shield costs OvO Tokens and forgives your first fall: a bubble catches your OvO and sets it on a wide nest where the missed platform was. In the Daily mode, everyone climbs the same tower that day, and your Daily best is kept apart from your normal best.

Is Hop Hop free, and can you play it on a phone?

Yes to both. Hop Hop is free on ovo.games, with no levels to unlock: every run is the full tower. There is nothing to download or install. The game runs in the web browser on phones, tablets and computers. On a phone it is made to be held upright and played with one thumb. On a computer you can tap with the mouse or use Space, the Up arrow or W. On a wide tablet held sideways, the play area sits in the middle and a side panel shows your best score, your eggs and the zone ladder. At the end of each run you can see your weekly rank when one is available and share your score.
