Gate Jam Tips: Sliding Carts Against the Clock

Quick answer

Gate Jam is a sliding block puzzle against the clock. Drag carts full of OvOs through free space and push each one into a gate of the same colour; the cart must fit inside the gate. Clear every cart before the timer runs out. Send out the carts that block the most others first, park carts in empty corners and freeze the timer on tricky levels.

Gate Jam combines a classic sliding block puzzle with colour matching and a timer. Every cart on the board is packed with OvOs that want to roll out through the gate of their colour, and carts block each other, so the order you move them in decides whether a level flows or jams. Here is how to think about it.

Games to try

The rules

Drag a cart in any direction through free space. Push it into a gate of the same colour to send it out; if the cart fits inside the gate, the OvOs cheer and roll away. Clear every cart before the timer runs out to finish the level.

The fit rule matters. A cart that is wider than a gate cannot pass through it, so check the size of the gate as well as the colour.

Find the cart that blocks the most

In most levels, one or two carts sit in the way of many others. Moving them out first opens the board and makes the rest of the level much quicker. Before you touch anything, spend a few seconds tracing the paths: which carts could exit right now, and which carts are standing in front of the most gates?

If an important blocking cart cannot exit yet, at least move it out of the main path.

Use corners as parking spaces

Empty corners are your friends. Parking a cart in a corner temporarily can open a path for two or three other carts. Just make sure the parked cart still has a route to its own gate later, or you may trap it.

When you park, prefer spots along the edge that do not cross any other cart's route to its gate.

Special carts

New twists arrive as you play through the 200 levels:

  • One-way carts only move in one direction, so think about where they will end up before you push them.
  • Frozen carts thaw as other carts leave, so plan to clear their neighbours first.
  • Two-colour carts need two gates.
  • Star carts also appear on some levels.

Each new type is a change in what order makes sense. When you meet one for the first time, slow down and work out what it needs before the timer pressure takes over.

Working with the timer

The timer is what makes Gate Jam feel lively, but rushing is the most common way to fail. A few seconds of planning at the start saves far more time than fast random moves. Many players find a good rhythm is: plan the first three exits, play them quickly, then pause briefly to re-plan.

When a level genuinely needs more thinking time, use the Freeze booster to stop the timer. The difficulty follows the usual pattern of a breather level every 5th and a hard level every 10th, so Freeze is most valuable on the 10th levels.

Other boosters

Besides Freeze, Gate Jam has Hammer, Hint and Continue. Hint shows a useful move when you are stuck, Hammer helps clear an obstacle, and Continue lets you keep playing when time runs out. Every level is built to be solvable, so Hint is a good way to learn what the intended first move was.

Where to play

Gate Jam is free to play in any modern web browser at ovo.games and in the OvO.games app for iPhone, iPad and Android. The first 40 levels are free for everyone with ads; OvO Pass unlocks every level and removes ads. If you like order-of-moves logic, Flock Out and Nest Express are good next steps, and our brain-training puzzle guide groups the OvO.games logic puzzles by how long a session takes.

Questions

Why won't my cart go through the gate?

The cart must be the same colour as the gate and it must fit inside it. A cart that is too big for the gate cannot pass.

Is there a time limit in Gate Jam?

Yes. You need to clear every cart before the timer runs out. The Freeze booster stops the timer when you need more time to think.

What are frozen carts?

Frozen carts cannot move at first. They thaw as other carts leave the board.

Is every Gate Jam level solvable?

Yes. All 200 levels are built to be solvable.
